New York's Sporco are history - although the group's brief existence in no way reflects its significance in the scheme of things. The band found brief success in early 2003 when they released several singles, including the "In A Sick Dark Room/Colombo Supremo" single which offered a chaotic and incredibly inventive spectrum of genres – post-hardcore, indie rock, dance punk, programmed beats, noise, sampling and thrash metal – that had absolutely no precedence and would go on to inspire numerous bands in the mid-2000s.
A condensed two-piece formed by Fred Krai (ex-Stooprock, Girls In Love) and John Milano (ex-The Catastrophe, Blood Ocean), they self-recorded and released several series of albums, EPs, and singles which were released on tiny underground DIY labels from 2002 through 2006.
This retrospective is devoted to collecting some of the best songs from this long-gone outsider project and rising it out from its unwarranted obscurity. It was a dirty, labor-intensive mission... but time kills off precious bits of passed-over sound, story, and ephemera every day, and Sporco's material is something which we felt needed an immediate recall.
Sporco managed to compose songs so unintentionally gritty, strange, vicious, and catchy. They composed songs with a familiar, yet unclassifiable style - it is unfiltered experimental pop, drama, isolation, and flirty unpredictable mood-swings.
This retrospective is not a 'greatest hits': With over 100 songs in their catalogue, this is a comprehensive retrospective that includes the stronger tracks from their output to bridge along with a few unreleased demo extras and rarities to reel in the diehards. This is a compilation that strives to be a captivating collection of songs that just glistened with ideas.
Largely recorded when Milano and Krai were in their late teens, the album’s 12 songs were self-recorded in basements/garages/sheds on four- and eight-tracks before being filtered back through a makeshift masterboard for editing and “mixing”. The real highlight behind this retrospective is that - finally - these tracks have been re-mastered and we are offered the absolute best possible audio versions of these songs.
